Camino’s on Friday night, what a great evening! First the service and attentiveness was outstanding. Camino’s menu I think was one of the best of the week and the food lived up to it. There were 4 of us and we had 3 of the appetizers - Salad, Pig and Meatballs. All were spectacular and full of unique, distinctive flavors. Dinners were amazing. Grouper was excellent but the side pasta dash with the basil tomato sauce stole the show for me. Pork chop was excellent as well. The vegetable lasagna was superb and enough for 2. My only negative was the desert. The strawberry tart was very tasteful served with delicious homemade vanilla ice cream. I was disappointed with the chocolate mouse. I had the mouse at the Barn and the Chocolate Expresso at C&O and was really looking forward to Camino’s version. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations. The mouse itself was tasteful but singular in flavor. I would like to have seen better presentation, lose the yellow cream and nuts. I’m picky about my chocolates and want complementary flavors such as espresso, raspberry or a rich creme that really makes you pause and enjoy each spoonful. All said Camino was excellent and I highly recommend during restaurant or anytime!
Fossetts - Service: excellent, Food: very good to excellent. Crab bisque was cold, tomato salad was very good; Halibut was perfect, tenderloin steak was very good; blueberry/spongecake and creme brule were excellent. Overall: would do it again in a heartbeat. This is what Restaurant Week is all about.
Maya: A loud bar that has false pretensions of cuisine. Was told an hour after ordering that the dessert I selected was sold out. 15 minutes later, three were served to the adjacent table. Must have been friends of the manager.
Waste of money - even at Restaurant Week prices
Ate at Carmello’s on Monday. Good as usual, the surf and turf , the salmon and the pasta dish were excellent. The veal was overwhelmed by the sauce. Worth a visit.
I too agree with Jim S. - stay away from Brasserie Montiel, so many good choices…off to Ten, then Orzo and Fossetts for my finale!
By the way try Savour on Emmet for a $30 meal all the time..a hidden jewel.
We ate at L’etoile last night in a group of 10. The service was excellent and the food arrived promptly. Given the size of our party, I was incredibly impressed with the taste and quality of the food. I had the sweet breads, beef teres major, and chocolate sour cream cake. The sweet breads and cake were fantastic. The beef was good, but not as good as last year’s beef tenderloin (which would be next to impossible). I also sampled the pork tenderloin, which I did not enjoy as much as my beef. All in all, it was an outstanding meal at one of my favorite restaurants in town.
C&O last night…superb! Everything! Eating there got me thinking of the best of the best of cville. Fosset’s and Clifton Inn fight it it out for #1 and #2. Then I would say C&O, Duners and Fleurie battling for 3,4 and 5. Does anyone agree? Am I missing a place?
I need to comment about Aberdeen’s salmon. It is a little ridiculous the way the salmon is served. I had my hands in my lap and the butter was jumping out and burned my hand once. It wasn’t pleasant. I had to wait for the skillet to cool down to where I felt safe enough to take a bite.
It was delicious, but the presentation needs a little tweaking!
Ate at Ventana Monday evening and it was delicious. Ate at Fossett’s Tuesday and almost went to heaven! Just ate at C&O and was superb as well. Looking forward to Old Mill Room tomorrow.
I must rave about Fossett’s. I almost died and went to heaven. I ordered the tomato salad, the beef, and the berry with lemon sorbet for dessert. The beef was the best I have EVER had. I can’t even explain how amazing this meal was.
The two other places were great, but I could eat the same meal at Fossett’s for the entire week!
This is $26 + tip + 9% total state/local taxes for a single meal. Even if you’re a cheapskate and tip a measly 10% (unthinkable, I know), that’s $31.17 for a single meal. If you think paying $30+ for any single meal is reasonable then you are disconnected with the majority of our planet’s inhabitants. I will also guess that you have lots of debt.
Did the Aberdeen Barn on Tuesday. I’ve lived in C’ville for close to 40 years and if you haven’t eaten at the Barn at least once you should. If you like steak and Prime Rib it is a must! Now there is nothing on the menu that will wow you except for the portion of Prime Rib that is served for restaurant week. The salad was a salad. The bread and crackers with cheddar cheese as always at the Barn was generous. For dinner I had the Salmon. On a scale of 1-10, I rank it a 1. Very dry, not well seasoned and served on a very hot skillet - so it continues to cook and get dryer as it served. I do not understand why it is not broiled - any amateur griller could do a better job at home. The Prime Rib however was as always delicious. You will be amazed at the portion - they don’t cut it down cuz it’s Restaurant week. So stay away from the Salmon - if you are a meat and potatoes guy you will be very pleased and stuffed.
Monday night we went to Brasserie Montiel and it was wonderful. I had the Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad - superb! One of the best spinach salads I have had. My wife had the Duck Confit and Savory Peach Upside Down Cake - and we both thought it was delicious with a very generous portion of duck. Duck can be greasy so I am not a big fan, but this was perfect. The main course of Paella and Argentinean Churrasco were both very good. I loved the Paella and the skewered mushrooms and tomatoes from the Churrasco. The Dark Chocolate Genache for desert was heavenly!!! I was extremely pleased with Brasserie Montiel - excellent food and excellent and extremely nice service. Highly recommend. Onto the Barn on Tuesday, C&O on Wednesday, Melting Pot Thursday, Camino Friday and Orzo for Saturday.
Agree with Jim S. - Don’t waste your money on Brasserie Montiel.
FYI, Ventana does not have a single highchair.
Had a fantastic, if a tad wasabi-crazy, meal at Bang! tonight - I had the sake-steamed shrimp followed by the Sesame-crusted Ahi. Watch out for the Wasabi Cole Slaw - clears your sinuses with a (ha-ha) Bang! But seriously - very nice choices, great martinis, wait-staff was a little slow and a tad on the ditzy side, but delicious food.
My husband and I have eaten many times at Brasserie Montiel. We have eaten there with friends as well, some of whom are hypercritical of restaurants. None of us have ever had anything but an excellent, very satisfying meal.
There are plenty of options for both vegetarians and meat lovers! You can find all of the menus in The HOOK on stands now so I would encourage you to find a menu that meets your needs and make a reservation TODAY, before it is too late…
please don’t make us normal people that like animal meat and fats suffer based on the whims of a few misguided vegetarians.
Listen to what free “speach” produces, but consider the source. I dined at Brasserie Montiel early on a weeknight during January’s Restaurant Week. The osso buco was awesome, not “AWFUL.” Look at the menu for July’s Restaurant Week and decide for yourself.
When I went to Brasserie Montiel, it was absolutely wonderful. Don’t let one negative comment put you off; give it a try! It’s a restaurant more people need to know about.
Very exciting list.
Glad to see so many new restaurants participating! And that the menu choices have been “ramped up” from last time :0)
Is there anything gluten-free? Can it be available upon request?
A word to the restaurants: please don’t forget us vegetarians! We’d love to try out many of these places, but if vegetarians are excluded out-of-hand by no options on the menus, we won’t be there.
Guess there is no free speach here when negative comments are posted. Stay far away from Brasserie Montiel….AWFUL
Really excited for the new additions and the great menus yet again! So glad this has been brought to Cville!
